Vinci's history
The history of French construction, energy and concession group Vinci SA goes back to the 19th century. The company was founded in 1899 as Société Générale d'Entreprises (SGE) and acquired many businesses along the way. After its merger with GTM Group in 2000, the company was renamed Vinci Group. Vinci's headquarters are located in Nanterre, near Paris.
Concession model
The concession model for construction that underpins Vinci's growth is a typically French system. In this system, a government body grants construction and subsequent exploitation to one company or a group of companies, excluding all others.
Vinci's predecessors' first concessions were for electricity networks. They built hydropower dams and operated power transmission and distribution networks. Additionally, they were granted concessions for tram and local railway lines. Later, water and sewage networks were also added to the portfolio.
(Inter)national expansion
Due to increased urbanisation in the 20th century, the group's precursors became increasingly active in the construction of transport and energy systems. Among these are autoroutes, parking garages, bridges and tunnels in France and abroad. In 1998, the group expanded to stadium building, creating the famous Stade de France which recently featured prominently during Paris 2024.
Vinci's operations
Vinci Group is one of the largest construction and concessions companies in the world. It is active in many countries, although the lion’s share of its revenue is still generated in its home nation.
Concessions
Vinci's concession divisions are VINCI Autoroutes, VINCI Airports, VINCI Highways, VINCI Railways and VINCI Stadium. The group controls more than half of France's toll roads, as well as highways in countries like Canada, Ireland and the US. Vinci operates 65 airports in 12 countries, including Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, London Gatwick and Belfast International.
Construction
VINCI Construction builds, owns and operates a wide variety of (large-scale) infrastructure projects worldwide, including in Australia, North and West Africa and the UK. Major endeavours are the Grand Paris Express railway project, the HS2 express railway line in the UK and an immersed tunnel between Denmark and Germany.
Energy
Through various daughter companies, VINCI Energies is active in France and its overseas territories and on all continents apart from Antarctica. These subsidiaries are increasingly active on the market for renewable energy. Vinci Group also owns Cobra IS, an originally Spanish energy infrastructure company that is active in 65 countries.
Real estate
In addition to its construction and concession companies, Vinci generates part of its income from real estate in France through its daughter VINCI Immobilier.
Vinci's stock exchange listing
Vinci is listed on Euronext Paris and is included in the benchmark stock market index CAC 40. It is also included in the EURO STOXX 50, a blue-chip index of Eurozone stocks. Some other indices it is part of are the Dow Jones Brookfield Global Infrastructure Index, Euronext 100 and STOXX Europe 600 Construction & Materials.
VINCI is also included in 3 main responsible investment indexes: Euronext Vigeo Europe 120, CDP's Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) and Euronext Eurozone ESG1 Large 80.
By the end of 2023, 76% of Vinci’s share capital was held by some 1,000 investment funds, mainly from North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Oceania. Another 10,2% of Vinci's shares was owned by Vinci employee savings funds.
Vinci in numbers
On 31 December 2023, Vinci Group had a combined market cap of €67 billion. Over 2023, the group reported a revenue of €68.8 billion; 29.6 million of which (43%) was generated in France. The EBITDA2 was €11.9 billion or 17.4%, up from 16.6% in 2022.
At the end of 2023, Vinci employed almost 280,000 people in over 120 countries, primarily in Energy (49.3%) and Construction (42.7%).
Vinci's dividend
The VINCI Group's dividend policy consists of distributing 50% of its consolidated net income. The dividend for 2023 was set at €4.50 per share. In 2022, this was €4 per share.
