Shell plc
From 1907 until 2022, Royal Dutch Shell was a dual Dutch-British oil and gas company. In 2022, Shell moved its headquarters from The Hague to London and removed the 'Royal Dutch' from its name. Shell plc continues to be traded on both the London and Amsterdam stock exchanges as well as the New York Stock Exchange. Shell's market cap is $212.3 billion (5 September 2024).
Shell's operations
Shell is vertically integrated and is active in every part of the oil and gas industry. This includes the exploration, production, refining, transport, distribution and marketing of oil and gas. Moreover, the company produces petrochemicals and is increasingly active on the renewable energy market. Shell's target is to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050.
The company is divided into 3 organisations: Integrated Gas & Upstream, Downstream, Renewables & Energy Solutions and Projects & Technology.
Integrated Gas & Upstream
This part of the company sources and extracts crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. It also manages the infrastructure that delivers these to market and is mainly organised along geographic lines.
Downstream, Renewables & Energy Solutions
This organisation provides products and services to Shell's business customers. It includes Chemicals and Products as well as Marketing. Part of Marketing is Mobility, the business you will recognise from its red-and-yellow service stations, as well as Trading and Supply.
Projects & Technology
P&T manages major innovative projects and delivers technical services to the rest of the company. This organisation is also responsible for safety and environment, contracting and greenhouse gas emissions management. Lastly, this organisation handles automation and artificial intelligence, among others.
Shell plc in numbers
By late 2023, Shell employed around 103,000 people in over 70 countries. As reported in their Annual Report, by 31 December 2023 Shell served around 33 million customers at more than 47,000 service stations every day and operated over 54,000 electric vehicle charging points.
For 2023, Shell reported a total revenue of $316.62 billion and a $14.5 billion share buyback programme. The company reported adjusted earnings of $28.25 billion for the full-year 2023 which was lower than its record year of 2022, when profits were around $40 billion. This was partially caused by lower prices in the market.
A further $3.5 billion share buyback was announced on 1 February 2024.
Shell's dividend
Shell plc pays out dividends from its net profit every quarter, targeting a 4% increase every year. Its dividend for both Q1 and Q2 2024 was $0.344 per ordinary share.
