What is an ETF?

ETFs, also known as trackers, are funds that follow the performance of an index, commodity, bond or composition of products. Unlike some other funds, ETFs are bought and sold on a stock exchange. Would you like to learn more about ETFs? Read our ETF article for all you need to know.

Small cap stocks

Small cap stocks are shares of companies with relatively small market capitalisations compared to larger publicly traded businesses. These companies are often in earlier stages of growth and may operate in niche industries or emerging markets.

Small cap companies can be found across sectors such as technology, healthcare, industrials, renewable energy and consumer goods. Compared to Large cap companies, Small cap businesses may offer higher growth potential, although they can also experience higher volatility and lower liquidity.

Because Small cap companies are typically less established, their performance may be more sensitive to economic conditions, interest rates and market sentiment. At the same time, some investors consider Small cap stocks attractive due to their potential for long-term growth and innovation. During periods of economic expansion, Small cap companies may outperform broader markets, while they can also experience stronger declines during periods of uncertainty.

Why invest in Small cap ETFs?

Small cap ETFs provide a way to gain exposure to a diversified basket of smaller publicly traded companies without needing to select individual stocks.

One reason investors consider Small cap ETFs is the growth potential associated with smaller companies. Some Small cap businesses may expand faster than larger, more mature companies, particularly in emerging industries or rapidly growing sectors.

Global Small cap ETFs may track indices such as the MSCI World Small Cap Index or the Russell 2000 Index, offering diversified exposure across hundreds or thousands of companies.

Small cap ETFs can also help diversify a portfolio that is heavily concentrated in Large cap stocks. Because Small cap companies may respond differently to economic conditions and market trends, they can provide exposure to a different segment of the equity market.

However, there are also risks to consider. Small cap ETFs remain exposed to stock market fluctuations and can experience higher volatility compared to Large cap ETFs. Smaller companies may also face greater operational and financial risks, especially during periods of economic uncertainty.
