What is an ETF?
ETFs, also known as trackers, are funds that follow the performance of an index, commodity, bond or composition of products. Unlike some other funds, ETFs are bought and sold on a stock exchange. Would you like to learn more about ETFs? Read our ETF article for all you need to know.
What is the Nasdaq, and what indices follow this stock market?
The Nasdaq was founded in 1971 in New York City. The stock exchange is best known for the large number of technology stocks traded there. In terms of market capitalisation, the exchange ranks second worldwide, behind the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The Nasdaq is divided into three segments: Capital Market (small cap companies), Global Market (mid cap companies) and Global Select Market (large cap companies).
There are several indices based on the Nasdaq. The two best-known are:
-
Nasdaq Composite
The Nasdaq Composite index tracks almost all publicly traded companies listed on the Nasdaq. It is a market capitalisation-weighted index where the stocks with the largest market capitalisation carry the most weight.
-
Nasdaq-100
The Nasdaq-100 tracks the 100 largest companies on the Nasdaq. Most ETFs that track a Nasdaq index track the Nasdaq-100 index.
Why invest in Nasdaq ETFs?
The Nasdaq leans heavily on technology companies. These companies have shown a lot of growth in recent decades. As a result, over the past several decades, the Nasdaq's returns have often exceeded those of the S&P 500. Keep in mind that the index also shows a lot of volatility. During a bear market you often see large tech funds go down strongly.

- iShares Nasdaq 100 UCITS ETF USD Acc (IE00B53SZB19): This ETF provides exposure to large, established companies in the technology and other sectors. It is listed in USD and reinvests any income generated by the underlying assets back into the fund.

VGT (Vanguard Information Technology ETF) and QQQ (Invesco QQQ Trust) are both examples of ETFs that track the performance of the Nasdaq index, but there are some differences between them:
- Holdings: VGT focuses specifically on the technology sector, while QQQ tracks the performance of the Nasdaq-100 index, which includes technology, communication services and consumer discretionary companies.
- Expense ratio: VGT has a slightly higher expense ratio compared to QQQ, which means that VGT charges a higher annual fee for managing the ETF.
- Weighting methodology: QQQ uses a modified market-cap weighting methodology, while VGT uses a more traditional market-cap weighting methodology.
