What is an ETF?
ETFs, also known as trackers, are funds that follow the performance of an index, commodity, bond or composition of products. Unlike some other funds, ETFs are bought and sold on a stock exchange. Would you like to learn more about ETFs? Read our ETF article for all you need to know.
Gold
Gold was one of the first commodities used as a means of capturing value. As early as 3,000 BC, a unit of value was linked to gold in Egypt. This made gold the first official medium of exchange for international trade.
Gold is one of the most popular precious metals. Today, the commodity has many applications. Of course, for jewelry, but gold is also used in certain electronics and aerospace.
Often gold is seen as a solid investment: it is assumed that gold will always represent a certain value and there will always be a supply and demand for gold.
Why invest in gold ETFs?
Investing in gold ETFs means you can invest in the gold market without owning physical gold. Usually, gold ETFs either track the performance of companies in the gold industry or the price of gold itself.
Like investing in gold directly, investing in an ETF that tracks the gold price can be a good way to balance a portfolio. In times of economic stagnation, investors often seek refuge in gold. When more gold is bought up by investors, the gold price rises.
Investing in ETFs that track companies in the gold industry, such as gold mine operators, have yet another dynamic. A disappointing turnover, lack of innovations or declining orders can affect the price. However, because you invest in multiple companies in the gold industry, a setback at one company doesn’t have a major impact on the overall ETF price. By investing in a gold ETF, you can spread the risk.
Gold FAQs
Some gold mining ETFs pay dividends. You can check the ETF's Key Investor Document (KID) to see if the ETF pays dividends.
When choosing a gold ETF, you can consider factors such as expense ratio, liquidity, tracking error and the fund's objective. ETFs that have a high expense ratio can impact your overall returns more. Liquidity is important to ensure that you can easily buy or sell shares. Tracking error measures how closely the ETF follows the price of gold, so a lower tracking error is desirable. The fund's objective refers to the specific investment goals and strategies outlined by the ETF, such as whether it aims to replicate the performance of physical gold, invest in gold mining companies or seek capital appreciation through other means.
The main difference between a gold mining ETF and a gold ETC is the underlying assets they track. A gold mining ETF invests in companies involved in gold mining, while a gold ETC tracks the price of physical gold itself. Gold mining ETFs may be influenced by factors like company performance, production costs and exploration activities, whereas gold ETCs directly reflect changes in the price of gold.
