The gaming industry may seem new, but you'd be surprised how long this important growth market has been developing. Ever since the video game Pong achieved its first success in 1972, this market has been on the rise. Today, gaming is one of the fastest growing entertainment industries worldwide.

The industry covers a wide range of activities from software and hardware development, to game development, publishing, and distribution. But it also includes companies active in e-sports (the organised multiplayer video game competitions) and streaming services such as Twitch.

Why invest in gaming ETFs?

Investing in gaming ETFs means investing in an entertainment industry worth more than the film and music industries combined. The days when games were only for children are long gone. Gaming has grown into an industry with a market largely composed of (young) adults. Gaming companies are now betting on trends such as e-sports, cloud-based gaming, social gaming, virtual reality (VR) and "rogue-like" gaming (a subgenre of role-playing video games).

One of the biggest costs in the gaming industry is the development of new games and their associated technologies. This means that a huge investment is first required for new games or new versions of games. Only when the game (version) comes out does it become clear whether the success is big enough to recoup the investments, or even to make (large) profits.

With the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, the growth of many gaming companies has begun to stagnate, but analysts also see new opportunities. Once gamers are less (often) tethered to their homes, that opens up opportunities for games on smartphones.

Terms and conditions for the €100 transaction fees offer

If you activate your DEGIRO investment account before the 1st of July 2023, DEGIRO will reimburse your transaction fees up to €100. The following conditions apply to this offer:

  • The offer is valid until the 30th of June 2023.
  • During the offer period, new clients who have activated an account will receive up to €100 in transaction fees reimbursed.

Acceptance of offer conditions
