Answer
Money laundering is the process of disguising the illegal origin of money. The process can be divided into three stages: placement, layering and integration.
- Placement is the introduction of criminally obtained money into the financial system.
- Layering is the carrying out of a series of transactions in order to conceal the criminal origin of the assets.
- Integration involves the integration of the assets into the legitimate economy.
All three stages are prohibited by the authorities.
