Looking at our data from the past years, we noticed that an increasing number of women opened investment accounts with us. Considering that still only 1 in 5 investors is female, this is a positive trend that we want to encourage. That is why we dove deeper into the data, and this is what we found.
Key findings
- Our female investor base has grown faster than our male investor base over the past five years.
- The majority of our female and male investors prefer to invest in stocks, but females invest more in our ETF Core Selection than men.
- Electric vehicle stocks were popular among women.
- Our female investors are almost as active as our male investors in terms of trading activities and respond to market situations in similar ways.
- On average, our female investors have fewer logins than males, but five years of data show that the trend of logins between women and men are highly similar in response to market changes.
Growth in female investors
While there is still a lot of room to grow, we are thrilled to see more and more female investors taking charge of their financial futures. The number of female investors using our platform has significantly increased, and females are signing up for a DEGIRO account at a faster rate compared to their male counterparts. Over the past five years, the amount of women grew at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) of 72.29% compared to 51.16% for men.
Preference for stocks and ETFs
When it comes to product preference, stocks are a clear favourite for both sexes. From January to August 2022, over 60% of our male and female investors invested in stocks. Electric vehicle stocks were particularly popular among women. In the first ten months of the year, Tesla and NIO were the most traded stocks by our female investors.
We see a difference in preference for ETFs, especially our ETF Core Selection. Women who invest with us are 74% more likely to invest in our ETF Core Selection compared to their male counterparts.
Behaviour
To get a better understanding of our female clients’ behaviour, we looked at activity in terms of trades and logins.
Trading behavior
When when zooming in on active and highly active women and men, we found that women are nearly as active as men in terms of trading activity.
Logins
In the first eight months of 2022, women logged in an average of 14 times compared to 24 times for men. Interestingly, while females logged in less, the trend of average logins for male and female investors is nearly identical. We can therefore infer that the condition of the markets plays a role in the number of logins for both female and male investors.
