DEGIRO analysis of over 100,000 Irish investor portfolios
Irish investors heavily invested in US technology stocks in 2025
- AI was one of the key investment themes in Ireland in 2025
- Only one domestic stock – Bank of Ireland – made the top list in trading
December 29, 2025. The 2025 stock market year in Ireland was also dominated by the megatrend of artificial intelligence. A recent analysis by online broker DEGIRO shows that nine of the twelve most traded stocks by Irish retail investors come from the US technology sector (see Table 1). Nvidia tops the list, followed by other tech heavyweights such as Alphabet, Tesla, intel and Amazon.
Frans Kuijlaars, Divisional Board Member of DEGRIO, comments:
“
The high trading activity in technology stocks reflects a global trend that has also found its way into Irish portfolios. The focus is not only on traditional tech heavyweights such as Nvidia or Google's parent company Alphabet, but also on relatively unknown growth stocks such as The RealReal.

Technology also shapes portfolios
Technology stocks not only dominated trading in 2025 but also accounted for an above-average share of the portfolios held (see Table 2). The ranking by invested assets is again led by Nvidia, Tesla and Alphabet, whose holdings increased by around 56 percent over the course of the year. Overall, all seven members of the "Magnificent Seven" (Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Nvidia, Meta, Microsoft, Tesla) are represented among the twelve largest positions. With AIB Group and Ryanair, two more Irish companies join Bank of Irland in the Top list of stock holdings at the end of 2025.

Table2 : Top 12 stocks by invested assets as of December 13, 2025
"Technology stocks continue to account for the largest share of Irish retail investors' assets, with appetite for many such stocks even increasing. Over one third of stocks held by our customers falls into this category," reports Kuijlaars. The volume invested in the sector rose by 14 percent year-on-year to just under 450 million euros. For Kuijlaars, this is a clear indication that many investors remain convinced of the long-term prospects of the technology sector. Accordingly, they would enter the 2026 investment year with an even higher weighting than in the previous year.
Client funds predominantly invested in securities
A look at the portfolio structure of Irish DEGIRO investors reveals a clear focus: equities account for around 60 percent of invested assets, with ETFs accounting for some 36 percent. Other asset classes play a minor role. The average account size rose by 9 percent to approximately 21,000 euros in 2025. At the end of the year, investors also held an average of around 1,500 euros in cash, corresponding to a cash ratio of 7 percent. Kuijlaars concludes: "Irish investors are clearly focusing on the stock market but are holding slightly higher liquidity reserves than their international counterparts, possibly in order to be able to react flexibly to possible market corrections."
